Choosing The Right Golf Clubs For Your Game Just Got A Little Bit Easier

Golf has undergone many changes over the years and the clubs we use have changed as well. Our iron sets are different, with most manufacturers recognizing the mounting popularity of easy-to-hit hybrids and marketing irons sets which start at the 4-iron and sometimes even at the 5-iron. It stands to reason, as for most club players hybrid clubs are significantly more forgiving to play than the irons.

Driver dimensions are regulated by the USGA and R…A size limits. That limit is 460cc and for most club golfers, bigger really is better. If you struggle with reliability with your driver, playing a bigger driver will definitely help. High moment of inertia and more uniform weight distribution makes modern drivers far more reliable, even on bad swings. Playing a bigger driver means less loss of distance and accuracy on miss-hits.

The engine of your driver, as with all clubs, is the shaft. Play a driver with a shaft that doesn’t match your swing and you’ll be hard pressed to find any accuracy or distance. Most common faults can be reduced or even eliminated simply by playing the right shafts. Struggling with a slice, then playing a softer shaft might be the solution. Struggling to get any height – a shaft with a softer tip section could well be the solution. Your driving will get stronger if you match your driver shaft ratings to your swing speed. If you don’t know your swing speed, nearly all shaft ratings will incorporate a carry approximation for calculating your best flex. Check the flex rating for various shafts and opt for one with a carry rating that matches your average yardage.

The fastest growing segment in golf equipment sales are hybrid clubs. If you need consistency in your long game, some easy-to-hit hybrids may well be your best option. Designed to be easy to hit from nearly any kind of lie, hybrids are easy to use from the tee and the fairway. You can even chip with them. Hybrids are designed to launch the ball high and land it soft, so shaft manufacturers now offer a range of shafts specifically made for hybrids.

Iron designs now come in an even wider range of choices. Modern iron design can help the majority of common swing problems in golf. Slices can be reduced with offset irons, wide soles on irons can reduce the fat shot and get much needed height on the ball for many. Take a long look at your irons. If their design isn’t helping your weak points, then it’s probably time for an upgrade.

The scoring clubs provide a lot of options to choose from as well. Wedges come in various forgiving designs so wedge play needn’t be compromised anymore. If the little flop wedge shot is creating problems, then a high lofted wedge may possibly be the answer. If you have difficulty getting out of bunkers, choose an easy to hit hollow sand wedge. These hollow wedges are almost impossible to miss-hit and make easy work of just about any bunker.

Relaxed equipment rules have given us some pretty strange looking putter designs. Strange looking, but effective. If your putting is failing you, a more forgiving putter design may well be the best choice. Are you closing the putter towards the hole too much? You probably miss a lot of putts to the left (for a right handed golfer) and a face balanced mallet could well be the remedy to your putting woes.

Choosing the right golf clubs for your game is about playing clubs that make the most of your strong points and minimize your weaknesses. It doesn’t need to break the bank either. The component market offers some very high quality clubs to choose from. As an added bonus, these component clubs can be custom built to fit your game and that’s the best way to play the right clubs.
